In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked, about 6-8 minutes. Break it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks.
Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the onion becomes translucent.
Stir in the barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and black pepper. Mix well and simmer the mixture for about 5-7 minutes, until heated through.
While the meat mixture simmers, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) if you plan to toast Texas toast.
Arrange the Texas toast slices on a baking sheet and toast in the preheated oven for about 5 minutes, or until golden brown.
Once the toast is ready, remove it from the oven and spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture generously over each slice.
Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top of the meat mixture on each slice.
Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and serve warm. Garnish with sliced pickles if desired.
