Ingredients
  

  • 4 pieces cubed steaks About 1 lb total.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour For dredging the steaks.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil For frying the steaks.
  • 1 medium onion Sliced.
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme

Instructions
 

  • Start by seasoning the flour in a bowl with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well.
  • Dredge each cubed steak in the seasoned flour, ensuring they are well-coated on both sides. Shake off any excess flour.
  • In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  • Once the oil is hot, add the cubed steaks to the skillet and sear for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned. Remove the steaks and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until softened.
  • Gradually whisk in the beef broth, scraping up any bits stuck to the bottom of the skillet.
  • Return the cubed steaks to the skillet, sprinkle with thyme, and bring to a simmer.
  • Cover the skillet, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 20-25 minutes until the steaks are tender and the gravy has thickened.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary before serving.

Notes

Serve the smothered cubed steak over cooked rice or mashed potatoes to soak up the delicious gravy.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
For extra flavor, you can add sliced mushrooms or bell peppers along with the onions.
