  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • ½ cup shortening
  • ½ cup cold water
  • ½ cup unsalted butter very soft
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg or cinnamon
  • 2 cups milk
  • cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (or 200°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine self-rising flour, shortening, cold water, soft butter, sugar, and nutmeg. Mix to form dough.
  • Roll dough into small balls and place in a greased baking dish.
  • In a saucepan, heat milk and ⅔ cup sugar over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
  • Pour hot milk mixture over the dough balls in the dish.
  • Drizzle vanilla extract over the top and bake for 30 minutes.
  • Let rolls cool after baking for optimal softness.
