  • cup rice vinegar for a tangy kick
  • cup water to balance the heat
  • ⅓ cup + 2 tablespoons cane sugar or granular sweetener if sugar free
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine dry sherry works too
  • 1 tablespoon sambal oelek or 1-2 teaspoons dried red chili flakes
  • 1 ½ teaspoons garlic finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon tamari or soy sauce tamari for gluten free
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch dissolved in 1 tablespoon water
  • 1-2 drops natural red food coloring optional

  • Grab a small saucepan to begin.
  • Combine rice vinegar, water, and cane sugar. Stir until sugar dissolves.
  • Add rice wine, sambal oelek or chili flakes, garlic, ginger, and tamari. Mix well.
  • Bring mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  • Remove from heat, let cool, then store in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Notes

Use pre-minced garlic and ginger to save time. Store extra sauce in the fridge or freeze in ice cubes for later use.
