- 3 lbs Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon butter for greasing the baking dish
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the heavy cream, milk, garlic, salt, black pepper, and dried thyme. Stir and heat until it begins to simmer, but do not let it boil.
Layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes, followed by half of the cheddar and Parmesan cheeses.
Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheeses.
Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
After 45 minutes, carefully remove the foil and continue baking for another 15 minutes until the top is bubbly and golden brown.
Remove from the oven and let it rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the layers to set for easier slicing.
You can add cooked diced ham or other vegetables if you want to enhance the dish.
For extra flavor, try adding chopped fresh herbs, such as rosemary or chives, into the layers.
Ensure that the potatoes are sliced evenly for consistent cooking.
