Equipment

  • 1 air fryer
  • 3 shallow bowls
  • 1 microplane or grater
  • 1 baking sheet
  • 1 cooking spray
  • 1 tongs or spatula

Ingredients

  • 12 sticks mozzarella cheese (string cheese)
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-seasoned)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper
  • as needed cooking spray

Instructions

  • Start by preparing your workspace. Set up three shallow bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with a mixture of breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  • Take each mozzarella stick and roll it in the flour until it is completely coated. Shake off any excess flour.
  • Dip the floured mozzarella stick into the beaten eggs, ensuring it is fully covered.
  • Roll the egg-coated mozzarella stick in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere the crumbs. Repeat for all mozzarella sticks.
  • Once all sticks are breaded, place them on a baking sheet. Freeze the breaded sticks for about 10-15 minutes. This will help them maintain their shape during cooking.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 390°F (200°C).
  • Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Arrange the frozen mozzarella sticks in a single layer in the basket, making sure they are not touching.
  • Cook for 6-8 minutes, flipping the sticks halfway through the cooking time for even browning. Cook until golden brown and the cheese is gooey.
  • Carefully remove the mozzarella sticks from the air fryer using tongs or a spatula. Allow them to cool for a couple of minutes before serving.
  • Enjoy your homemade air fryer mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce for dipping!

Notes

For a spicier version, consider adding crushed red pepper flakes to the breadcrumb mixture.
These mozzarella sticks can also be made in advance and stored in the freezer for quick cooking later on. Just add an extra minute or two to the cooking time if cooking from frozen.
